Leaving No Stone Unturned… Enjoy By 07.04.15 IPA

First off, if you’re a beer drinker and have never tasted and enjoyed a brew by Stone Brewing Company out of Escondido, CA, stop what you’re doing right now and go buy some. Being the largest brewery in Southern California, Stone is a heavy hitter (in more ways than one!), and their latest “Enjoy By” series is continuing the tradition of very hop-forward West Coast IPA’s. Previous releases of their “Enjoy By” series have been received very well on beer rating sites such as BeerAdvocate, where this particular IPA scores a staggering 98/100 “World Class” score. I am inclined to agree with the rating, especially with this latest batch.

The current release is known as the Enjoy By 07.04.15 IPA, and it is a fine example of a Double IPA. It’s bitter, hop-forwardness is nearly as overwhelming as its humongous mouthfeel. This is a big, huge DIPA, and if you’re not careful, it will put you on your butt really quickly. It has a nice, malty body that follows the hops, and it’s surprisingly refreshing. The beer pours nicely with a good amber color and moderate head: nothing unexpected from a Double IPA. At a high(ish) 9.4% ABV, this is a beer to split, or at the least to consume over a substantial meal (such as a really good cheeseburger and fries). The biggest reason to go out and drink this beer now, however, is its freshness. They call it “Enjoy By” for a reason. This DIPA is not built to last years, much less months. Enjoy it now while it’s available and at its peak.

Prices will vary from store to store, especially across the US. I was able to score a few bottles from my local Trader Joe’s in Centreville, VA for $7.99 a bottle. Some new to the craft beer scene might gawk at that price for a single 22-ounce bottle, but it is quite worth it! Just be sure you don’t stand up too fast if you tend to drink good beer quickly. No, I definitely didn’t do that. I would never do that…
